School of International Studies
Located in the beautiful, green, sprawling campus of University Utara Malaysia (UUM) in Sintok, Kedah, the School of International Studies (SoIS) was established on the 1st of July 2011. SoIS's structure can be traced back as early as 1997 when it was then known as the School of Social Development (SPS). Later it was restructured and renamed as the Faculty of International Studies (FPA) in 2007 before eventually becoming what is now known as SoIS.
The establishment of SoIS underscores UUM strategies towards internationalisation and becoming "The Eminent Management University". With the overall mission of becoming a renowned centre of excellence in the fields of International Affairs and International Business in Asia, SoIS has two departments namely Department of International Affairs (INTAFF) and Department of International Business (IB). At present, the School's faculty consists of over 60 full-time members from diverse nationalities, along with several distinguished pratitioners from both government and private sectors serving as adjunct professors. SoIS currently offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the areas of political science, international political economy, strategic studies, international relations and international business. The School currently offers two undergraduate programmes: Bachelor of International Affairs Management (Honours) (BIAM) and Bachelor of International Business Management (Honours) (BIBM). It also offers a wide range of postgraduate programmes at Master and PhD level, including MSc (Strategic Studies), MA (Political Science), MA in International Political Economy (IPE), MA in International Affairs and Trade (MIAT), MSc (International Business) as well as various PhD programme.
SoIS aspires to be in the forefront in research and education in the fields of international affairs and international business, with concentration on Asia. The School's ultimate goal is to offer innovative education, cutting-edge resources and and enduring sense of scholarly community which make it the ideal environment for disseminating and sharing knowledge. Futhermore, SoIS's increasing reputation for excellence in research, strong collaborations with industry and government partners, and innovative approaches to teaching and learning are a major source of strength. Bachelor of International Affairs Management (BIAM) program has been awarded with ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) certification since 2013. Meanwhile BIBM program has been certified by the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (CILT). In addition, the BIBM program is in the midst of acquiring an accreditation from The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
It is hope that SoIS graduates will develop and acquire not only knowledge, but also various skills that employers seek, ranging from problem-solving, analytical and critical thinking, teamwork, to self-discipline. Hence, SoIS is dedicated to providing its students with an education that combines rigorous study and practical work experience, as well as nurturing inquisitive minds. In doing so, SoIS provides a platform of intellectual stimulation of a diverse campus community that brings together innovative and intellectual synergies within UUM and beyond.
