Professional & Educational Background

Muhammad Ali Ridha Norman is a senior lecturer of international relations at the School of International Studies (SOIS), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). He is also a research fellow at the Asian Institute of International Affairs and Diplomacy (AIIAD). Dr. Ali completed his Master’s Degree at Peking University (PKU) and received his Ph.D. from China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU).

 

Research Interests & Expertise

Dr. Ali's primary research interests revolve around the foreign policy (FP) strategies of small states, with a particular focus on their interactions within the complex dynamics of Southeast Asia-China relations. He also extensively studies the broader context of great power competition in East Asia, examining how regional and global powers assert influence and shape the political landscape in this strategically important region. His work provides insights into the challenges small states face in navigating power imbalances and maintaining their sovereignty amidst intense geopolitical rivalries.
