Biography

Dr. Mohammad Zaki Ahmad is an Associate Professor at the School of International Studies (SoIS), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). He is currently the Director of the Asian Institute of International Affairs and Diplomacy (AIIAD), UUM. Since 2020, Dr. Zaki has been appointed as the editorial board member of the Scopus-indexed Journal of International Studies (JIS) and the Malaysian Management Journal (MMJ). Previously, he was the Director of UUM Sports Centre (2018) and Deputy Dean of SOIS from 2014 to 2017.  Dr. Zaki holds a PhD degree in Maritime Policy from the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), University of Wollongong, Australia. Dr. Zaki is an alumnus of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) International Deans’ Course 2014/2015.  

He is actively involved as a speaker in various workshops, conferences, and seminars and workshops on topics ranging from AUN-QA, academic writing, fisheries and maritime policy, the law of the sea, and maritime disputes, to contemporary issues and challenges of international affairs. 

Dr. Zaki’s current research interests on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, the law of the sea, maritime policy, and regional diplomacy practices in the context of African States.  More recently, his research interests focus on the study of Malaysia’s foreign policy posture in the South China Sea dispute, and local community engagement in promoting and facilitating responsible fisheries, with a focus on food security. Mohammad Zaki Ahmad is of international affairs.
