Professional & Educational Background
Dr. Shazwanis Shukri is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of International Affairs, School of International Studies, Universiti Utara Malaysia. She obtained her PhD degree in Politics and International Studies from Cardiff University, United Kingdom (2018); an MSc in Strategic Analysis & Security and a Bachelor of Social Sciences in International Relations, both from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2012 and 2009 respectively. Her PhD thesis focus on the management of maritime security threats in the Mediterranean Sea with particular reference to NATO and the European Union (EU). She is the program chair for the undergraduate program of Bachelor of International Affairs Management in the School of International Studies, UUM since 2021. She also serves as an Associate Fellow at the Asian Institute of International Affairs and Diplomacy (AIIAD), UUM. Previously, she served as an editorial board member for the Journal of International Studies (JIS) from 2018 until 2020. She is currently the Managing Editor for the JIS (2020-2024).
Research Interests & Expertise
Her main research interests include security & strategic studies, the law of the sea, maritime security, foreign policy and European studies with a specialisation on the EU and NATO. She also currently working on projects pertaining to non-traditional security issues, in particular terrorism, irregular migration and refugees in the South China Sea.
