Professional & Educational Background

Fauzan, PhD is a lecturer at the Department of International Relations, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) "Veteran" Yogyakarta since 1998. He holds a PhD in International Studies from Universiti Utara Malaysia, a master's degree (MSi) in International Relations from the University of Indonesia, and a bachelor's degree (SIP) in International Relations from Gadjah Mada University. He has served as an expert reviewer for reputable and indexed international journals such as The Pacific Review, Political Geography, and Cogent Social Sciences. Currently, he holds the position of Associate Fellow at the Asian Institute of International Affairs and Diplomacy (AIIAD), Universiti Utara Malaysia (2022-2024). Additionally, he is a visiting fellow at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (1-31 October 2023). Dr. Fauzan is frequently appointed as a consultant and border expert by the National Border Management Agency (BNPP).

Research Interests & Expertise

His research interests include international relations, border studies, and security studies. He has recently published several works, including "Cross-Border Posts (PLBN) as Border Security Management between Indonesia's Kalimantan and Malaysia's Sarawak (IKMAS UKM Malaysia Working Paper, 2024); An Assessment of Cross-Border Governance between Malaysia and Indonesia: A Hard or Soft Border Approach for Sustainable Development and Security (Conference Paper, Universiti Malaya, 2023); "Border Diplomacy: Concepts and Practices in Indonesia" (Book co-author, 2021), "Border Security Problems in the Waters of the Natuna Islands: Between National Boundaries and Illegal Fishing" (Aegis: Journal of International Relations, 2019), and "Maritime Border Security and Challenges for Indonesia" (Geografia: Malaysian Journal of Social and Space, 2019).
